Abstract

The core catcher is the main component of VVER-1000 NPP is designed to retain and to cool liquid and solid fragments of the damaged core, reactor pressure vessel parts, and reactor internals during severe accidents with core melting. The efficiency of cooling the molten core of a reactor by safely removing the heat load from the molten metal mirror, ensuring the elimination of vapour explosions leading to the destruction of the localization area of accidents, the reactor cavity and the containment is assessed in this study. Besides, the subcriticality for three stage of core catcher function during severe accident management have been analysed using MCNPX code. The results show the safety and efficiency of the VVER-1000 (AES-92) has been increased due to core catcher installation to manage the severe accident.
